TEXT4. POWER-GENERATING BLOCKS WILL CAUSE HARM

TO THE ENVIRONMENT


Rostov environmental movement «New Wave» opposed the construction and commissioning of the new power-generating blocks №3 and №4 at Volgodonsk Nuclear Power Plant. “The construction of power blocks can cause harm to the environment of the region”, said the representative of the movement Y. Vodolazskaya.

“Environmentalists are against the construction and commissioning of two new power blocks at Volgodonsk Nuclear Power Plant because one cannot build nuclear power plants in the areas with large concentrations of people, near large bodies of water. Also, it should not be forgotten our region is earthquake-zone. We are categorically against it”, said the ecologist.

Public hearings on the construction and maintenance of power-generating blocks №3 and №4 of the Nuclear Power Plant were held in village Dubovskoye (Rostov region). A preliminary version of the materials of environmental impact assessment (EIA) of the activities on construction and maintenance of the two new power blocks was discussed at the hearings. Over 220 people gathered there. Notably the majority of them were young residents of the village Dubovskoe as well as those of the settlements and farms of the district. Among them there were representatives of the state corporation «Rosatom», OJSC «Concern Energoatom», the Nizhny Novgorod Institute «Atomenergoproekt» as well as public organizations, academic circles of Volgodonsk, Rostov-on-Don and professionals of the power plant.

The outcome of public debates became a protocol which would be presented to the organs of state ecological assessment for inclusion in the final version of the materials of EIA.
