TEXT2. JOURNALISTS IN NPP RESPONSIBILITY ZONE
Rosatom regional office of Union of Journalists of Russia has organized roundtable concerning activities of Volgodonsk NPP on 05.03.2009. The objective of such roundtables is to provide journalists with objective information about the activities of Volgodonsk NPP. The first such meeting took place at the regional House of Journalists on February 19. The meeting was chaired by the vice president of the Rostov region office of the Union of Journalists of Russia O. Aksyonova. The roundtable was attended by representatives of TV channels “Yuzhny Region” (“Southern Region”) and “Tele-X”, the heads of the regional offices of Moscow newspapers “Selskaya Zhizn” (“Rural Life”) and “Literaturnaya Gazeta” (“Literary Newspaper”), correspondents of regional newspapers “Molot” (“Hammer”) and “Nashe Vremya” (“Our Time”) “and “Yuzhny Region” (“Southern Region”) news agency, the press service of Emergency Ministry in the Southern Federal District.
The director of the Research Institute of Biology of the Southern Federal District T.Shkurat made a report on “Radiation and Human Health in Rostov Region.” She said that the institute had examined over 2,000 people living in the 30-km zone so as to detect thyroidal gland problems and cancer. The results of the survey have shown that people living near Volgodonsk NPP are healthy and even healthier than in some other districts of Rostov region.
The senior researcher of the Nuclear Physics Department of the Southern Federal University Y. Burayeva made a report on the radiation and ecological situation in Volgodonsk NPP zone. The nuclear physics laboratory of the Research Institute of Physics of the Southern Federal University have tested soil, plants and bottom sediments of Tsimlyansk reservoir and the cooling pond of Volgodonsk NPP and have found no radio-nuclides produced by the plant.

The director of Rostov Information-Analytical Centre of Volgodonsk NPP A. Borovik told the audience about the prospects for development of nuclear power engineering in Rostov region, Russia and the world. The journalists were satisfied. “I think that it was right decision to organize such a meeting,” the correspondent of “Literaturnaya Gazeta” V. Yaroshenko said. His colleague from “Selkaya Zhizn” V. Liashev said: “It is very important that the studies we have learned about today are integral part of the ecological policy of Volgodonsk NPP and they will be continued. We will certainly inform our people about this.”
