Implements for Growing Crops
           1. Many types of implements have been developed for the activities involved in growing crops. These activities include breaking ground, planting, weeding, fertilizing and combating pests. Some cereal crops are still planted by broadcasting seeds – that is, by scattering the seeds over a wide area. Machines for broadcasting usually consist of a long seedbox mounted on wheels and equipped with an agitator to distribute the seeds. Broadcast seeds are not always covered by a uniform or sufficient depth of soil, so seeding is more often done with drills, which produce continuous furrows of uniform depth. Specialized implements called planters are necessary for sowing crops that are planted in rows, such as maize. Maize planters and other similar machines have a special feed wheel that picks up small quantities of grain or separate kernels and places them in the ground.
2.Fertilizer can be distributed during the winter or shortly before seeding time. Commercial fertilizers are commonly distributed, along with seeds, by drills and planters. Manure is distributed most efficiently by a manure spreader, which is a wagon equipped with a bottom conveyer to carry the fertilizer back to a beater attachment, which disintegrates it and then scatters it on the ground.
           3. After crops have begun to grow, a cultivator is used to destroy weeds and loosen and aerate the soil. A flame weeder, which produces a hot-air blast, can be used to destroy weeds growing around crops, such as cotton, that have stems of tough bark. The weeds are vulnerable to the hot air, but the tough stems protect the crops from damage. Chemical herbicides applied in the form of a spray or as granules are used extensively for weed control. Insecticides for pest control are applied to soil and crops in the form granules, dust, or liquid sprays. A variety of mechanical spraying and dusting equipment is used to spread chemicals on crops and fields; the machinery may be self-powered, or drawn and powered by a tractor. In areas where large crops of vegetables and grain are grown, aircraft are sometimes used to dust or spray pesticides.
           4. Chemical pesticides are used in nearly all farming operations undertaken in developed countries. However, increasing concern over the harmful effects that pesticides may have on the environment has led to the use of alternative forms of pest control. For example, farmers use crop rotation to prevent pests that feed on a certain crop. Also, certain pests are controlled by introducing an organism that damages or kills the pests, but leaves the crops unharmed. Finally, some crops are being genetically engineered to be more resistant to pests.

          1. As the combine moves through the field, the gatherer points are positioned between the cornrows. The stalk rolls pull the cornstalks down so the deck plates will snap off the ears. Trash knives prevent weeds and trash from wrapping around the stalk rolls. The gatherer chains move the ears up to the auger. The auger moves the ears to the front of the feeder house where rubber paddles feed the ears into the feeder house. It costs time and money if the gatherer row components are worn or not properly maintained. Worn gatherer row components may result in: stalk roll wrapping, row unit plugging, feeder house plugging, ear loss, pulling up of cornstalks, kernel damage. Two critical parts that affect productivity on a corn head are the stalk rolls and gatherer chains.
           2. The stalk rolls are formed from nodular iron and then placed in an automatic welding machine that hard-faces the surface of the stalk roll flutes. This ensures longer life for the stalk roll, season after season. On a new stalk roll, the flutes are straight. As the flute becomes worn, it becomes concave at the rear of the stalk roll. This concave shape will not allow the roll to aggressively pull the stalk downward and strip the ear from the stalk.
           3. The fluted stalk rolls are designed with a more aggressive stalk-stripping action for increased feeding capacity in down or weedy crops. The straight flutes provide a tighter working area (outer edge of flute to body of adjacent stalk roll) to produce a more aggressive feeding action. The full-length flutes also provide a 55 percent longer crop engagement area between the rolls to allow for faster pull-through action.
           4. Efficient corn harvesting depends on the strength and capacity of the corn head gatherer chain. The gatherer chain acts as a conveyor system to move the ears into the auger. Embossments in the sidebars and the flight lugs of the chain protect the connecting pinheads. Without these raised areas, the connecting pinheads would be exposed to excessive wear, resulting in premature chain failure. The face of each flight is extended down to create a lip between the sidebars. The lip prevents debris from collecting at the roller, and reduces drag and wear to the chain and sprockets. The flight face slants at a 15-degree angle away from the roller chain. This slight angle creates a self-cleaning effect as the flight moves the ears toward the auger. Every element of the chain-pins, bushings, flights, roller, and sidebars - is heat-treated for strength and long life.
